Faces of Social Media.

5 Negative Impacts of Social Media.

There are several negative impacts that social media has created in society. These negative impacts include cyber-bullying, and giving birth to false information, and one of the major ones is the coordination of terrorist groups.

Adolescents in today’s culture are moving from using the Internet as an “extra” in everyday communication to using it as a necessity for communication. An issue that can arise from the use of social media is cyberbullying. Generally, cyberbullying means hurting someone using any information or communication technologies, in fact, 95% of adolescents are fully connected to the Internet.

Another negative impact is the ‘relaying of false information’.   “The World Economic Forum (2013 report), has listed the massive digital misinformation as one of the main risks for modern society”.  The result of misinformation can be clearly seen with an example of - the way some people reject the link between HIV and AIDS because of the false belief spread by social media about the virus. That it was just a false rumor spread by the US government to control the African American population.  But because of the rapid spread, it is sometimes difficult to discern fact from fiction.

Sharing news on social media websites such as Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter, sometimes leads to negative impacts in society.

Now talking about the biggest threat - Terrorists and Militia groups are also learning to use social media and communicate on different platforms to recruit supporters. For example, in 2014 the famous Islamic militia group ISIS had several Instagram accounts to broadcast their belief and propaganda.

While Instagram worked quickly to remove these accounts.

6 Social Media’s Positive Impact.

Apart from many downfalls of social media, there are several positive impacts since the past decades too.

Fact, every coin has two sides!

Positivity of Social Media includes - cutting huge distances and helping individuals to keep in touch with loved ones all around the world, keeping everyone up to date with latest news in just one touch, helping teenagers adjust and increase their self-esteem, and giving information or knowledge about literally anything!

Before social media, communicating with loved ones far away was very typical It was done through telephone or letters. With social media bringing individuals closer together, communication is instant these days almost all across the world. A significant impact is noted for our military and their families when soldiers are deployed at faraway locations. From writing letters Once or twice a month, our protectors cannot talk to their families almost every day!

Since September 11th, 2001, keeping up to date with the latest news has become increasingly important. Introducing social media in our society, “over 50% of people learn about breaking news on social media.” In 2012, individuals on social media were notified of the shootings at the local movie theatre in Aurora, before local news outlets could report it.

Social media has also encouraged teenagers to connect which impacts their self-esteem. By using social media, teenagers are able to establish relationships and maintain relationships that help increase their self-esteem.

Students get study benefits, extra knowledge and exposure, and even much more!
